NEW YORK, New York -- For almost a century, there were
many Delmonico's Restaurant locations in New York as well as a
few other Delmonico businesses. Unfortunately, many books,
articles and websites misstate the locations and numbers of these
Delmonico businesses. To clear any confusion, the locations and
dates of operation are given here.
Delmonico's Restaurants
Between 1830, when the Delmonico brothers opened their first real
restaurant, until 1923, when the last remaining, authentic Delmonico's
Restaurant was closed, Delmonico's Restaurant operated in ten separate
locations in New York. More precisely, the authentic Delmonico's
Restaurant operated in ten buildings at nine locations ( the
Citadel on South William Street was built twice).
It is noteworthy that, at various times, the family operated several
Delmonico's Restaurants simultaneously. From 1865 through 1888,
for example, there were four Delmonico's Restaurants operating in
Manhattan at the same time.
These ten are:
- 25 Williams Street (1830 to 1835)
- 76 Broad Street (1836 to 1837)*
- 2 South William Street (1837 to 1890, the "Old Citadel"))
- Chambers Street (1856 to 1876)
- East 14th Street (1862 to 1876)
- 22 Broad Street (1865 to 1893)
- 26th Street (1876 to 1899)
- Pine Street (1876 to 1888)
- 2 South William Street (1890 to 1917, the "New Citadel")
- 44th Street (1896 to 1923)
* Note that 76 Broad Street served as a lodging house and
hotel from 1834 until it was destroyed by fire in 1845, but during the
period from 1836-1837, the restaurant was located temporarily after
the 25 Williams Street building was destroyed by fire.
Delmonico non-restaurant businesses
The following lists the Delmonico business locations other than the
Delmonico Restaurant locations. Note, however, that the list does
not include any of the personal residential locations of the Delmonico
family members.
- Unknown location near the Battery: Giovanni Del-Monico's
wine shop (1824-1826)
- 23 William Street: John and Peter Delmonico's first cafe,
selling coffee, wine and pastries (1827-1835)
- Long Island, later part of Brooklyn: 220 acre farm
(1834-1848*)
- 76 Broad Street: Lodging House (1834-1845)
- 25 Broadway: Delmonico Hotel (1846-1856)
*Note: In 1848, when Peter Delmonico retired to live on the
farm, it ceased being part of the Delmonico business.
Conclusion
Delmonico's Restaurants and other businesses prospered in Manhattan
for nearly 100 years, beginning with the early wine shop started in 1824
by John Delmonico (then known as Giovanni Del-Monico), and ending with
the closure of Delmonico's Restaurant on 44th Street in 1923.
